Power: It's An Arms Race Thing

Baseball's salaries are insane. There's no other way around it. The Yankees have spent $978,129,386 since making the Mets ride the subway in 2000. That accounted for 592 wins over the past six seasons.

If you work those numbers out to a per season basis, you're looking at about 99 wins per year, and a cool $163M out of your chequing account. I guess it's not a big thing to ask of someone who pulls in closer to the seven digit annuals us mortals can only dream of, but still, it’s enough to make any non-World Series winning owner cringe.

What I want to know is why are all of these GMs spending their money so poorly. If I was given the pay rolls that most pro baseball executives are handed, the first thing you've got to assess is how deep your team is. The strength of an organization is found deep within the infrastructure built by the men in charge. Expecting to be competitive, and stay competitive, lies in your minor league programs. It's in the mind's of the minor league directors, the directors of scouting, and the scouts themselves. They are the people who subsequently shape the future of organizations, well; most organizations (damn those Yankees).

Right now some of the teams who are building themselves the right way, and by the right way I mean with strong young arms, and lots of them, includes; Detroit, ChiW, LAA, Min, LAD and a few others in smaller doses.

Now by no means is it a new concept to baseball enthusiasts that pitching and defense wins championships, but what I'm proposing, is for all of these slugger happy, over-spending franchises to go a new route. One that has been followed before, is being followed now, but for some reason, doesn't attract more attention.

Sign for pitching. Trade for pitching. Draft pitching. Hire smart, diligent, proven pitching coaches. Build around a centre-piece with strong, young arms.

It may not be feasible to completely change the landscape of a team in the immediate future, either because of contractual restraints or the logistic inability of dealing with other teams, but by dealing the everyday position players that teams have come to love, you will be putting yourself in a much better position to win, both now and in the future.

Within the past couple of years, we've seen power shift from those who have money, to those who have pitching.

In recent memory, teams such as the Tigers and White Sox have made huge strides in their respective power rankings, much aligned with the fact that they possess very deep and talented pitching rotations. The Houston Astros have been annual post season threats, and this is with a team batting average over the past three years around the .250 mark, not spectacular at all. What the Astros have had has been pitching and top-notch pitching at that. With the likes of Clemens, Pettite and Oswalt anchoring your staff and Brad Lidge coming in and closing things down at the end, you can see why they've had success.

This is a path that's been traveled before, just ask the Atlanta Braves’ teams of the 90's who were synonymous with being known for having a stable of young arms up and down the organization and the men in charge who knew how to use them.

When the next major contract is handed out to a position player, ask yourself if you think the addition of a couple extra runs will really be the difference maker. As history tells us; power and winning, well, it's an arms race thing.

PRIDE Shockwave 2006 NYE

Since the turn of the century, Pride FC has been recognized in MMA (mixed martial arts) circles as the leading promotion in terms of talent worldwide. Recently, the tides have started to shift slightly, but only slightly, thus far. At present, Pride's line-up of talent is still daunting to those who aspire to obtain such names as Emelianenko, Barnett, Filipovic, or Nogueira, (4 of the world's top 5 Heavyweights) just to name a few... Shockwave, their New Year's Eve show, and biggest of the year, promises not to disappoint.

If you have never watched an MMA event in your life, this is the one to catch. Throughout the card, you will be witness to many, both intriguing, and exciting match-ups; the Heavyweight, and Lightweight belts will be contested, and for the two Champions defending, there will be more than just their titles at stake.

The Lightweight Division

Since Penn's departure from the LW ranks, Takanori Gomi (25-3) has since been recognized as the world's number one lightweight fighter. With the creation of an official LW division in 2005, Gomi was finally able to realize the dream of becoming Pride's first LW Champion, after toppling Hayato Sakurai in the finals of the inaugural LW Grand Prix Tournament. In just a few days, he will put that title on the line against a very capable Mitsuhiro Ishida (14-2-1), who respectively, is currently ranked number 7 in the world by MMAweekly.com.

Currently, I still believe that Gomi, (at just 28 years of age, and most probably, just entering his prime) is the best that Pride has to offer for a LW. His wrestling is great, and his hands could be the division's fastest. However, if there has ever been a question mark about Gomi, it's in his desire; Gomi, who lost in a non-title contest earlier this year to Marcus Aurelio, cited "lack of motivation" as an excuse in post fight interviews.

Was that loss the medicine Gomi needed to fix his issue? I for one, am willing to bet that "the Fireball Kid" has found that motivation since, and will retain his LW title come NYE.

Prediction: Takanori Gomi via UD (Unanimous Decision).

Antonio Rodrigo "Mintotauro" Nogueira (28-4-1)
vs Josh "The
Babyface Assassin" Barnett (20-4-0)

Let me just start by letting out a primal yell in excitement, "Ahhh!" Alright, now that we've got that out of the way, lets break down this fight.

Nogueira, until this past summer, held the # 2 HW ranking in the world for over 3 years (only taking a backseat to Fedor Emelianenko). He has widely been recognized as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters ever in MMA, and showcases his vast arsenal of skills every time he steps foot in the ring. A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner first and foremost, Nogueira has rounded himself into the complete package; his boxing is sharp and very technical, although he lacks that 'one punch' KO power, and his wrestling is strong as well. Of his impressive 28 wins, 18 have come by way of submission.

At just 30 years of age, one would think that the Brazilian Top Team member, and former Pride HW champion, would just be coming into his prime. However, years of hard fought wars inside the Pride ring have began to take their toll on the future legend, and recently, health concerns (vision) have come to the forefront. The current world # 4 seemingly, is starting to wind down, and when he attempts to avenge this past summer's split decision loss to Barnett (in the semi finals of the Open-weight GP tournament), one might question whether or not a loss could bring about talks of retirement.

With the rumoured departure of Mirko "Cro-Cop Filipovic (current world #2, and Pride Open-weight GP Champion 2006) from the Pride organization, the winner of this fight could very well find himself in a title fight against Pride's HW Champion; With 2 of his 4 losses coming to the hands of Fedor, you can be certain that "Minotauro" is hungry for another shot at regaining his title.

His task will be a tall one. At 230lbs, Nogueira will be giving up between 20 and 30 pounds to Barnett who is renowned for his wrestling; but one thing is certain, he will be as prepared for this rematch as he has ever been. Minotauro has never been stopped early in a contest, and I don't expect this one to be any different. Expect a 3 round war, and expect excitement, as both guys like to finish their opponents before the final bell!

Josh "the Babyface Assassin" Barnett is the current world # 3. With his finals loss in the Open-Weight GP tournament this past summer to Filipovic, and semi-final victory over Nogueira, Barnett has resurrected a career that had gone stagnant.

The former UFC HW champion is merely 29 years of age, and of his 4 career losses, 3 of them have come at the hands of Cro-Cop. This is significant, in that his only 4 losses have come to the hands of world class strikers; Cro-Cop and a young Pedro Rizzo (former Brazilian Muay Tai Champion) in the UFC years earlier. Scary for Nogueira? It should be... because Barnett has NEVER been stopped by another grappler. He's slick, he's strong, he's well versed in submissions, and as of this past year, he is in the best shape of his life.

I fully expect this fight to look very much like their first; Both fighters enjoy all facets of the game, and I believe that despite giving up a significant size advantage, Nogueira should get the better of the stand up action. Both of these men have never been submitted, so I don't feel like an early stoppage is likely to come from the ground. Barnett (being the stronger wrestler) should be able to maintain top position for the majority of time spent on the mat, so if Nogueira is to take this one, he better make a statement with his hands.

Prediction: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira via UD

The Heavyweight Title

It has long been said that "styles make matchups", and if that is indeed the case, then MMA fans should be in for yet another treat when reigning, and undefeated, Pride HW champion and World # 1 Fedor Emelianenko takes on World # 9 Mark Hunt. This will be Fedor's first title defense since August of 2005, when the Champ defeated then number 3, Mirko Filipovic in a convincing 3 round unanimous decision. Since that time, Fedor has fought twice, but in contests that were meant to showcase the Champion's talents, moreso than present a legitimate challenge to him.

Mark Hunt (5-2-0) at 32 is relatively new to the MMA game, coming over from the ranks of K-1 (the World's premier striking/kickboxing organization), where he won the K-1 World GP Tournament in 2001. Like Cro-Cop, his striking is among the world's best, however, his evolution as a complete fighter has not caught up to that of his K-1 counterpart (Filipovic). That is to be expected, after all, he has far less experience; but one thing is constant, his chin is iron, and his hands are heavy.... very heavy!

At just 5'10, his 250lbs frame can often be deceiving, but make no mistake, this New Zealand native is quite agile on his feet. We have seen Fedor get caught once before, but Mark Hunt is anything but Fujita, who is known for his wrestling prowess. Fujita, with a powerful right hook, gave Emelianenko the worst case of rubber legs I have ever seen without a fighter actually hitting the mat; if Hunt happens to land a similar punch, you can be sure that the mat is exactly where Fedor will end up. It's a puncher's chance, but nonetheless, it is a chance.

The 30 year old Fedor Emelianenko (24-1-0) is everything the hype promises. The World # 1's only career loss came in his 4th fight, and was due to an accidental illegal elbow (not caught by the ref in charge of action) in the first exchange that cut Emelianenko right above the eye. The fight never got off the ground as the contest was stopped by the ringside doctor, and the loss was never overturned to read as a 'no contest'. Years later, within the Pride ring, Fedor brutally avenged that loss to Kohsaka, and all that was questioned has been put to rest.

Besides being widely recognized as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter, he is the Pride HW Champion for over three years running, and also the 2004 Pride Heavyweight GP tournament Champion. His list of victims include many of the "who's who" in the HW ranks, and when we talk about well-roundedness, Fedor's name should top the list.

A thinking man, Fedor himself claims that he has never gone into a fight with a specific game plan; rather, he analyses the way his opponent is reacting on that night, inside the ring, and builds a game plan as he sees fit. He will be the overwhelming favorite in his fight against Hunt, and is expected to take the fight to the ground. Giving up 20lbs to the portly Hunt, this is where Fedor will take control, through his notorious 'ground and pound' technique and submission ability. Hunt's two losses in the Pride ring have come by way of submission, and this contest should be no different. Expect Fedor to stand with Hunt, until finding his moment to shoot in, but you can be certain of this.... He will clinch, he will trip, and he will shoot.

Prediction: Fedor Emelianenko via submission, Round 1.

The lineup of fights from top to bottom at this years Shockwave event, if nothing else, promises to be great entertainment for those of us who enjoy witnessing some good fights. From MMA's highest level of talent, to eye dazzling pyrotechnics, Pride knows how to put on a show, and Shockwave 2006 will be no exception.

Seriously, what's with TV these days...

I'm sitting in front of my TV right now and would love to watch the Raptors/Sonics game. This shouldn't be a problem; I have NBA League Pass, TSN, about 12 Sportsnet channels, and The Score, but still no Raptors game. This also isn't the first time this has happened this year. Most Friday nights that I'm home and not out on a hot date or consuming empty substances, I'll turn on the TV hoping to God that the Raps game won't be on the monopolizing RaptorsTV, unfortunately, most times it is.

Now I understand that its advantageous for teams to get into the network biz, there's big money to be had and it's another outlet of reaching out to your fan base. What I don't understand is why do teams continue to alienate their loyal fans to such an extent?

By all means should the Raptors, and any other pro sport franchise, be able to have the sole broadcast rights to some of the teams games, but having more than a quarter of the season kept away from your fans is way too much.

I remember when I would be able to catch every game throughout the year back during my days in Grimsby. Those were the good times. I was assured that if they were playing, the game would either be on TSN, Sportsnet or The Score. Now, all this has changed. I won't see every game in the season anymore. I'll miss huge buzzer beating wins, like last nights game in Portland.

(On a side note - How impressed have you been with the production and poise by the young Andrea Bargnani? I mean, coming into the season I had told people when asked about the teams chances this year that we'd probably be in store for another quiet season, but may have some life brought in by our Euro stars. When asked about the number one overall pick, I said; Give him three years, then we'll talk. Now maybe I was just protecting myself from being disappointed, and trust me, being a Raps fan; disappointment comes often, but Andrea has been superb. If he can continue to progress at the rate he has been doing so this year, we'll be looking at one of the leagues most athletic and diverse front court duo's and be a power in the East.)

Now back to what we were talking about. If the Raptors think that making a few extra bucks off the subscription fees they're charging for RaptorsTV is more important than allowing fans to easily access their broadcasts, they are completely wrong.

By not having the Raps on standard cable channels that the majority of fans can access, what they are actually doing is forcing people to lose interest in the team. When people don't have something in their face, the old adage plays true; out of sight, out of mind.

If I only have access to one game a week, I hope that I'll be home to watch that one game. If not, well then I'm not thinking about the Raptors as much as I would otherwise.

Right now RaptorsTV is lined up with LeafsTV (I hate the Leafs and will never pay a cent to watch one of their games), GolfTV (I've already got the Golf Channel, and really don't know how different this will be), ESPN Classic (Ok, there will usually be one vintage game that I may catch 20 mins of), HPItv (I'm not a chronic horse gambler, so this isn't necessary), NHL Network (This could be advantageous if they showed some games or had some quality inside the league programs, however this isn't the case), Fox Sports World (not a huge soccer or rugby guy), Xtreme Sports (doesn't TSN show the XGames? What else is there to watch?), and the World Fishing Network (I don't even need to comment).

Now I did think that Rogers offered RapsTV for a minimal price of $2.99/month, however, I wasn't able to find this information on their website, so, can only assume they've moved away from this convenience, but let me know if I'm wrong.

Nonetheless, the Raptors should be trying to keep themselves at the forefront of the public's mind. They need to be the first thing you think of when turning on your TV for a night of sports action. When you can't see 24 of your favourite teams games because of exclusivity, something’s wrong. This is especially true when your team has a .363 winning percentage over the last 4.25 years and no playoff appearances.

Please Fans, Wake Up!

When the NHL All-Stars are named early in the New Year there will be one glaring stand-out; Rory Fitzpatrick. The people who closely follow the league will attest that Fitzpatick is a very distant afterthought when mentioning the list of possible All-Star candidates. Actually, who am I kidding? I doubt anyone outside of Vancouver or his hometown of Rochester, NY knew he was even in the NHL. The likes of Pronger, Lidstrom, Nidermayer, Phaneuf and Zubov are often common place in the leagues mid-season exhibition. This year, a travesty will happen, and the future of all-star fan balloting may hang in the balance.

With a quirky, but somewhat ingenious marketing ploy, the Vancouver Canucks and Rory Fitzpatrick's faithful followers have united as one to carry this blue collar representative to the second spot among NHL defensemen in Western Conference balloting as of today.

With the implementation of a basic website and parody t-shirts, the marketing group at the Canucks has done a fantastic job to bring some attention to a sport that desperately needs it. I only hope that's all it brings; attention.

The fans are asked to voice their collective opinion and vote for who they think deserves to be in the starting line-up for the goal parade we call an All-Star game. This is not a new process for the league; it is done across the board, by all professional sports. Do I think it is the best formula for finding the most deserving players? No. Is it rewarding for the fans to have an input into who they would like to pay to see play in one game? Yes.

Indirectly, it is the fans that pay the players inordinate amounts of money to play a game, but it's not their right to make a mockery of the system.

If Fitzpatrick does make the starting line-up, he was quoted as saying that he wasn't sure if he would actually accept the honor; that he would discuss with his fellow colleagues around the league and get their input.

RORY, YOU'RE NOT AN ALL-STAR!! This should not be something you have to think about.

It is a great honor to be recognized by the fans for your dazzling play, consistency, production, and plain hard work. From these attributes, Fitzpatrick is 1 for 4, yes, he works hard.

In fact, Rory has only played in 20 games so far this season and has an ever impressive 0G, 0A and -1 +/- rating to show for his “hard” work. This is far from All-Star figures and would alienate him amongst his peers if indeed he does decide to make the trip to Dallas.

Don’t think this is a new coming of age for fans. We have been rallying behind fan-favourites in years past, despite the fact they may not be truly having an All-Star year.

Grant Hill was voted to start the 2001 NBA All-Star game although appearing in only 4 games that year due to his infamous ankle injuries. Mike Schmidt was voted into the 1989 MLB All-Star game even after he announced his retirement from the game only two months into the season. These two examples pale in comparison to Mr. Fitzpatrick however.

Hill is a great talent, although unfortunately having to deal with recurring seasons plagued with injuries. He actually had to sit out that All-Star game due the an injury. Schmidt, being a multiple league MVP and 12-time All-Star, was simply being thanked by the fans who got to marvel in his brilliance for so many years. He too did not participate in the game.

Even this past year we have seen how far teams will go to increase the attention their club is receiving. A.J. Pierzynski of the Chicago White Sox was engulfed in a marketing campaign that made light of his altercation at home plate earlier in the season with Cubs catcher, Michael Barrett.

Barrett, steaming mad that Pierzynski had just scored and had something to say about it, clocked Pierzynski in the side of the head. The campaign read "Punch AJ." Although not entirely deserving of the honor, the catcher still did have decent numbers and wasn't buried at the end of the bench.

In this case though, Fitzpatrick is not deserving whatsoever. He will be out of place with the other true All-Stars of the league. What will he be thinking while he's sitting in the dressing room lacing ‘em up before the morning skate; "Wow, this is fun. I've only played half the games this year and have accumulated a total of 9G and 18A throughout my 10 year career."

On his player bio at nhl.com his highlights for the year read: Logged a season-high 20:16 of ice time and had a plus one rating, Oct. 26/06 at Chi.

20:16 of ice time!?! This is your highlight for the season? And against Chicago nonetheless, one of the leagues worst teams.

If Fitzpatrick does get voted into the All-Star game I can only hope he has the decency to withdraw gracefully. He can thank all of his avid supporters, but letting the players who are deserving of the honor to go instead.

Being named an All-Star should not be taken lightly. The life of a pro athlete can be over at any minute and for this honor to be tossed around like a joke is somewhat disheartening.

Maybe what fans are trying to say is they don't care who plays in the game. If this is the case, well, then all hope for a bright future is seemingly lost.

So please, get out and vote. Vote for Lidstrom. Vote for Neidermayer. Vote for Phaneuf. Vote for Liles. Vote for Visnovsky. Vote for Schneider. Please, vote for a real All-Star, not Rory.

UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz...Dec. 30th

Tito Ortiz (15-4) vs. Chuck Liddell (19-3) @ UFC 66

Chuck Liddell (LHW Champion) vs. Tito Ortiz (former LHW Champion) on December 30th offers that classic striker vs grappler match up that has intrigued the minds of MMA fans throughout the world. Former training partners, and now long time rivals, the two have stepped foot in the Octagon head to head only once before. That fight saw Liddell send Ortiz to the matt following a barrage of punches, prompting 'Big' John McCarthy to stop the contest during second round action. As is often the case, a little bit of controversy was to follow; Tito, sporting a nice gash under his right eye, would have been the first to tell you that it was in fact, a thumb nail that caused the cutt, effectively disabling Ortiz's vision. This was not the first time such a charge had been made against Liddell, and it certainly wasn't the last.

Regardless of all that, Chuck maintains that he is in Tito's head, something that Ortiz himself admits may have been the case years ago, but claims today he is affraid of no man at 205lbs. This brings us to our first fight factor; is there a mental edge in Liddell's corner? Something as devastating as a TKO victory certainly doesn't leave the mind easily, but should Tito truly believe that an unruly cut caused the ensuing stoppage, then perhaps he does feel he has what it takes to dethrone the confident, and certainly rolling Chuck Liddell. If we feel that we can take the former LHW Champion at his word - and we have no reason to believe otherwise - then I suppose we can trust Tito when he says that no such edge exists today.

The Game Plan

Both fighters heading into this fight will come with very different game plans. Liddell more than likely will be looking for the early stoppage; he will want to keep the fight standing, while looking to counter Ortiz with his heavy hands and looping hooks that have ended so many nights before. Liddell, a former National kickboxing Champion, has the striking advantage and will look to capitalize on it.

Ortiz has never been renowned for his boxing, but make no mistake, the 31 year old is no slouch in the stand up game himself. Perhaps his most valuable asset there is defense. Ortiz with high, tight hands, has been able to withstand many combinations and flurries in the past while finding the necessary space and time to look for a take down. This is where Tito will want the game to end up. His explosiveness and athletic ability have always made him dangerous on the ground, and he has often resorted to the ground and pound technique in order to finish his fights. Taking Chuck down will be a tall task. Liddell possess world class take down defense, and even when he has landed on his back, he shows an uncanny ability to stand back up.

If Randy Couture (World-class wrestling) couldn't take down Chuck, then what chance does Tito have, who merely wrestled in Junior College? The chances will be found with patience. At 37 years of age, Liddell's cardio has been questioned on more than one occassion. If Tito can withstand early attempts by Liddell to finish the fight, he may find himself in the favorable positionof being the fresher fighter come the late rounds. At this point, Ortiz - a cardio machine - should be able to impose his will on Chuck, and take the fight where he's most comfortable.

Strength and weight should not a play a sizeable factor in this fight. Both men walk around at roughly 215lbs on a regular week, and have a high level of strength at the 205lbsclass.

Predictions

Tito Ortiz via TKO ref stoppage, late round 4.

I am considerably more divided in picking this fight than I usually am; but I feel like it's time for a change in the guard, and I think that Tito is the man with the best chance to accomplish that.

If Tito was to lose this fight, the UFC would have to bring in more talent at 205 to give Chuck a run, because no one under contract today would have a better chance than a healthy Ortiz.

Liddell has run through a string of easy match-ups (for him) - save Babalu who’s carelessness tossed any chance right out the window - and hasn't been challenged in some time. He's a great fighter, but he's not that great where he should be able to dominate the biggest North American MMA Promotion's 205lbs division in the manner in which he has.

The UFC lacks depth at 205, and it's an issue you can expect to be resolved come mid 2007. With the recent buyouts of the WEC and WFA, Zuffa has taken several big name fighters under contract; perhaps "Rampage" will find himself in a rematch in the not so distant future, and this time, with a title on the line.

Although Zuffa claims that they will continue to run the promotions as separate entities, and not use them as "feeder" organizations for the UFC, many skeptics remain.

Mountains contain Gold...

Allen Iverson will lead the Nuggets to the NBA Finals.

When AI was dealt from Philadelphia on Tuesday, not only was Denver in store for the leagues second leading scorer and hard knock attitude, they got a flame lit under their franchise.

Just when it looked like life in the mountains couldn't get any worse, hope was brought in the form of a 5'10 pit-bull. When Melo hit Mardy Collins with a clenched finger swipe at the back end of the MSG brawl, hope for a gloried playoff run hit a brick wall in Denver. Luckily for Nugget fan's, they would have a new tattooed poster boy leading the way until the leagues’ leading scorer could return; Allen Iverson.

In the time following a blockbuster deal, where a superstar asks for a change and to be dealt from the place that he called home, and home called him their hero, everyone will scrutinize the choices made, by all parties. The aftermath of the AI deal will bring a new, fresh and promising future to both organizations involved in the process.

As the clocked ticked away and Nuggets brain trust saw their opportunity slowly fading to land one of the NBA's top 20 players of all time, they acted independently, and made it happen. When a third team couldn't be found to help make the deal more financially sound, the Nuggets acted swiftly.

In order to get a deal done Philly was looking for flexibility. What they got was just that, the ability to build a new team, give their tortured fan base a new start; new hope.

The Sixers acquired the rights to PG Andre Miller (13ppg, 9.1apg, 1.5spg), PF Joe Smith (expiring contract at the end of the season) and Denver's two 1st Round Draft Choices (protected before #20). In return, the Nuggets got a seven-time all star, two-time league MVP, All-Star Game MVP, and a guy who's consistently atop the leauges scoring race. Yah, they got a pretty good player in Allen Iverson. The futures of both franchises have been changed dramatically, and both for the best.

With Philadelphia reeling after having their best player in the past decade basically banished from all team operations - his locker name plate taken down, his highlights deleted from the teams intro video - they were desperate to move the superstar. GM Billy King's future as an executive in the league will not be a hall of fame story, yet, he had the opportunity to right a major wrong he had created. By moving AI, he would allow himself a fresh start, something the franchise desperately needs.

Although the Sixers were hoping for complete flexibility after the deal, they should be happy with their return. By picking up a proven PG in Miller to run your team, you've allowed a base to be built. Even though Miller has been ripped in the past for his lack of effort and sometimes monotonous characteristics on the court, he has been around the league for years and knows what it takes to survive in the NBA. Joe Smith's contract will expire at the end of this season and so will his tenure in Philly. To go along with their own lottery pick, the Sixers have also locked up two more first-round picks (picks will be from #20 and beyond). With the departure of AI, and the contract of Smith at the end of the year, the Sixers will have some financial flexibility for once. After having a team payroll in the high $90M figure, freeing up some cap space will be pivotal to success, that is, if King can make a few competent decisions, which has yet to be shown.

This upcoming draft class is going be deep, with big men at the forefront. If Philly can use its three first-round picks wisely and obtain quality youngsters to go along with Korver, Iguodala, and the newly acquired Miller, there could be light at the end of the tunnel. That light could be as bright as the sun if the lottery balls bounce in their favour and the number 1 pops up. In that case, Mr. Greg Oden, you are now the face of a franchise and a city where being a superstar, as AI will attest, is not an easy task.

In regards to the Nuggets, well they just landed themselves one of the most dazzling, charismatic, big game performers the league has ever seen. Iverson brings intensity to the game rivaled by no one today. Now it will be up to George Karl to make everything work.

Doubters have said that Iverson doesn’t possess the right attitude to win, that he causes turmoil in the dressing room, that his bad habits are going to catch up to him. Well tell me when that time comes, and trust me, I won't be holding my breath. When it comes down to it, AI can flat out play. Who else do you want the rock to be with in the final seconds of the game: Kobe, Wade, Lebron...or, how about Carmello Anthony?

The most showing sign, early in their existence as co-superstars, will be the trade off made by both. If they are able to work in harmony, sharing the ball and touches, feeding off each others strengths; speed, vision, pure scoring ability, then, they will succeed and the sky is the limit. If old habits reign true though, disappointment will follow. However, I don't see this happening.

The fire that has been lit under Iverson is one that will burn until he is hoisting the Finals Trophy and prophesizing his legacy, in Denver, not the 215. The vengeance he is going to hold to his former organization and their not-so-esteemed leader will burn deep. It was reported that Iverson asked for this deal, however, as we have recently learnt, that was not the case. What was asked for was a change in scheme, a new breath of life, if that meant dealing the superstar, well that was a decision for King to make, not Allen.

The Western conference is a powerhouse, and don't think that the likes of Nash, Duncan, Kirilenko, Nowitzki, Yao, and co. are going to let the Nuggets have a smooth ride. No, like the mountains, this will be a rocky climb to the top, but one only worthy of a warrior, and I like the chances of the small man with a big bite. Go get 'em Allen; you deserve the chance to finally shine.

...........

On a side note; this could all change in the very near future. With the Timberwolves losing out on the AI sweepstakes, disgruntled superstar Kevin Garnett could be in the same position as Iverson. If this happens and he lands with, say, the LA Lakers, well, the West just got even tougher to go through...

NFL Blackouts

When the NFL introduced the very popular Sunday Ticket package a few years ago I was not in a situation to involve myself. Now that my circumstances have changed for the better I have been the proud owner of my cable carriers Sports Pak.

This could possibly be one of the best packages put together by a cable provider in the history of television. Every MLB, NHL, NFL and many NBA games are aired nightly. Along with the pros, numerous college basketball and football contests are also right at your fingertips, one click away.

One very rewarding thing to be able to do is, sit down around noon hour on Sunday morning, think about the night that was and the memories you're soon to forget, then start sifting through the days best games. Most Sundays my TV guide will have reminders set next to the Colts, Bengals, and Chargers games, for good reason. I also make sure to catch my teams, the Bills and Lions (Barry Sanders was a major influence).

Since I do live within driving distance (and mind you, I've driven across N. America for sports) I like to get out and continue an on-going tradition. As I have been doing for the past four years or so, I love to get out with the fearless and enjoy a game in its essence at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Between the smell of the bbqs, footballs sailing wildly onto windshields from overweight middle-aged arm chair QBs, and the cute girls wearing XSM jerseys, it just adds something to the game that can't be captured on the plasma.

Since I'm unable to enjoy the pleasures of being a seasons ticket holder, which I would if I lived in either Buffalo or Detroit, I've purchased the Sunday Ticket package, along with team apparel and merchandise. I tell friends and family I'm a fan. Now, let me ask you this; do fans watch their favourite teams games on TV when they can’t attend?

I think the answer needs to be a resounding; YES!

Well, then I guess I'm not much of a fan then, seeing as I've missed two of the last three contests. And there's only one culprit; the NFL.

With the leagues ever expanding fan base, the increased exposure of the NFL Network, and the inexplicable advertisement and sponsorship monies coming in from every possible angle, the league is getting richer by the day. So why would it go out of its way to alienate their most valuable partner?

I understand the logic behind why teams would want to have their games blacked out in their home regions. What I don't, and never will understand, is how does a home region stretch over 150 km? And how do you expect people to come to the home games when they are already sold out?

The Bills are entering the final few weeks of the season and are looking at making a final push at the last playoff spot in the AFC, albeit a long shot. Three weeks ago when the leagues leading rusher and favourite for the MVP award came to town, I expected to sit back and enjoy some exciting ball. What I sadly found was the following message: THE GAME HAS BEEN BLACKED OUT IN YOUR AREA.

...um...pardon, me? I have over 400 channels, over 20 of them dedicated to football on Sunday. You're telling me not one of them is airing the game?!

Fortunately I was able to change channels and was be entertained by the rest of the league. Then, this past week I attempted to tune in to see Buffalo play Miami. Again, blacked out!

Now, what am I paying for again? I thought the purpose of NFL Sunday Ticket was to provide the unmatched opportunity to watch your favourite team play every week. Now the two most important weeks, I've been the guy who didn’t catch any of the action.

The NFL needs to take a hard look at its broadcasting policies and needs to make some altercations now. Over half of the US can't gain access to Sunday Ticket even though they are more willing to pay for it. Now, even those who do have can't see their favourite teams play because they live too close.

The equivalent to this scenario would be buying a new TV from Sony. Bring that TV home, set it up, watch it for a few weeks, then, when there's a big game that you really want to see, a Sony rep comes by your place, turns off your tv, and says "Sorry, this game is going to be blacked out on your tv."

I wouldn't expect the Sony rep to make it out of the house before he gets a beer bottle to the side of the head.

Please NFL, don't make me hit you with a beer bottle.

Vernon Wells...and the Blue Jays future

Monday, December 18th, 2006.

Mark that date in your mental calendars.

With the recent signing of Vernon Wells, the Toronto Blue Jays have shown the big spenders around the Majors that they are here to play, and play competitively. By making a commitment to one of the most renown 'almost'-free agents, not only have they spoke volumes to their competitors, they have screamed to their fans; "WE ARE GOING TO TRY!"

If you reside on the East Coast this could be something that hasn't been worried about for over a decade. If you live north of the 42, this made a Monday enjoyable.

For the first time since 1991, Toronto is going to be a major player for years to come. The city has been suffering through ownership and personnel changes that haunt franchises and immobilize clubs for over a decade (ie. the Pittsburgh Pirates).

Not until, and I say this with mixed emotions, Ted Rogers came in and bought majority interest in the club, has there been as much vigor and promise to the organization since the glory days of the early 90's. A time that seems to be in the very distant past.

In the fall of 2000, the man who would soon be renovating to put cell phone and video stores behind the backstop made a bold move, Ted Rogers purchased 80% of a club who had been bouncing around the .500 mark, and this was even with the greatest pitcher of the game playing at his highest level. Things changed quickly though. JP Ricciardi was brought in and with him, he brought a new mind frame. Extra dollars were soon to follow. The Jays were going to see better days.

Still, not until this past week did we know how sunny those days were actually going to be. Not since '92 & '93 were the Jays poised to be in a position where they would be buyers, instead of sellers. The imminent Wells negotiations were a top priority for Ricciardi, even if he wouldn't admit it.

After two unsuccessful attempts to lock up free agent pitchers, hope was diminishing that Vernon would be able to return. But JP made a bold move. Acting on the original offer sent from Wells and his agent to the GM, Ricciardi anteed up and showed VDub the money: $126M/7 Yrs.

The key with this whole deal is how both player and management have been able to work together, both now and in planning for the future. Every player wants to win, Vernon is no different, despite being one of the most respectable and heartfelt players in the league. No player can continue with a franchise and stay sane if you never make the playoffs, never get a chance to make your dreams come true. Kevin Garnett, I'm sorry. AI had enough. Everyone wants to win. By substantially back loading Wells' contract, the Jays are still in position to be buyers, not just window shoppers.

Now where...

Since Wells is slotted to make $5.6M in 07, $500K in 08, and $1.5M in 09, the Jays are still in a position to go out and attract free agents.

The various scenarios in how they will address their needs will be what follows. As the free agent class has been substantially dwindled, Ricciardi may need to look in the form of a trade. Alex Rios has been the recent speculation of interest, and for good reason.

Rios, 25, started to show the flair that makes him a fan favourite in the T-Dot. With an arm that rivals Vlady, great speed both in the field and on the base paths, and a stick that helped make him a first time All-Star last year, Alex is demanding a lot of attention.

This is a very good move for JP. Although he may not actually want to move Rios, by looking at his options, he is only better positioning himself for future moves. Rios is a corner outfielder entering his prime. He was a first time All-Star last year, batting over .360 before going down with an infection - then, .333 after his return in Sept. Rios is not one to be moved without getting fair value in return, but he is a very attractive player, especially since he can be used in CF if situated in an average-smaller outfield (Florida seems a little large).

The Jays do have outfield spots loaded with the recent signing of Wells, Reed Johnson and Adam Lind waiting in the wings. To go along with these young OF, the Jays have strong young arms in the likes of Brandon Leauge, Dustin McGowan and Jeremy Accardo who will attract attention.

Although the ladies love Alex, we're reminded time and again that pitching brings home the prize.
